First Annual Agriculture Career Fair
On April 13th District staff members participated in the first annual Agriculture Career Fair organized by the Lake Region Vocational Center. With over 850 students in attendance, the District was one of many organizations at the fair, to talk about the work we do and to promote career opportunities in the agricultural field. Attendees included students from grades 3-12, as well as adult education communities.
District staff were especially excited to highlight one of our newer programs, the Cumberland County Urban Conservation Agriculture Network (CC-UCAN), at the event. Over the past year, the District has partnered with Cultivating Community and the Opportunity Alliance to establish CC-UCAN. The goal of the program is to expand agricultural education and opportunities, to underserved communities in the greater Portland area, including New Americans and at-risk youth. Many members of these target groups were unable to attend the career fair themselves, so with the help of videographer Chris Tucker, District staff recorded interviews with participating exhibitors to highlight their business/career. Chris then worked to put the interviews into an awesome video compilation to share with the members of our community and beyond.
We look forward to next year’s Agriculture Career Fair and more opportunities to share our love of agriculture! To learn more about CC-UCAN, email Damon Yakovleff or reach out via phone at 207-892-4700.
