Students learn about healthy water from PWD and CCSWCD
This school year, the Portland Water District and the Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District partnered together to teach local students about healthy water in Maine. Using the WaterWays lessons, the middle schoolers learned the characteristics of healthy aquatic ecosystems and discover how humans impact watersheds. Seven area schools participated in the TroutKids program raising brook trout in their classes and then releasing them into local rivers.
We provided lessons at 13 schools and reached over 1,600 students throughout southern Maine!
This amazing program is funded by the Portland Water District and taught by the Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District.
Thank you to all of the staff from the Portland Water District and GZA who volunteered their time to help with the trout releases.
Thank you to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife for providing the brook trout eggs to our classrooms!
