We Are Hiring a District Educator

The Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District is hiring a District Educator to support their classroom and adult education programs. The District Educator will work with the Education and Outreach Team to deliver lessons to K – 12 students in the classroom, outdoor classrooms or through field trips. Duties and Responsibilities

Educational Program Support:

  • Design, coordinate, and implement innovative classroom and field study programs in schools:

    • Schedule lessons, service-learning projects, field trips, and summer recreation programs

    • Manage education supply inventories

    • Communicate and coordinate with educational partners

  • Pursue professional development to keep programs meaningful and effective and to stay abreast of educational trends and standards.

  • Assist with workshops and conferences as needed.

  • Participate in the Education & Outreach Team and collaborate on projects.

  • Assist with fundraising efforts to support the District’s educational programs.

  • Work with the Team in creating and using student assessments and teacher evaluations to determine effectiveness and refine programs.

  • Represent the District to other groups and to the public at local, regional, and national conferences and events to further the District’s outreach programs.

  • Promote programs through coordination of print materials, displays, tours, events, websites, presentations, and social media.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to teach environmental science programs:

    • Applicable to youth and adults in both classroom and informal settings.

    • Research and develop environmental science place-based and service-learning programs.

    • Connect science curriculum to other subject areas.

    • Deliver lessons in engaging, meaningful ways.

    • Familiarity with soil and water systems, pollution, and impact of human action on natural systems.

  • Ability to plan and prioritize work to manage time effectively and accomplish assigned tasks:

    • Schedule and prioritize various tasks so that work is completed on time according to their urgency.

    • Organize work area or plan work to accomplish tasks more efficiently.

    • Estimate resources needed for project completion.

    • Keep all parties informed of progress and all relevant changes to project timelines.

    • Anticipate obstacles to project completion and develop contingency plans to address them.

    • Communicate with Project Managers when projects go off-track.

  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office, SquareSpace, and social media platforms.

  • Proficient skills in written and oral communications: Clearly and concisely conveying complex environmental issues to a wide variety of audiences, including students K-12 and the public.

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs and cross rough terrain carrying supplies.

  • Ability to provide transportation (mileage reimbursed) and a valid driver’s license.

  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.

  • Ability to pass Maine Department of Education Background Check.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, education, or other related technical field.

  • One to three years of experience in coordinating and implementing environmental or educational programs.

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Supervision Received and Exercised

The work is performed under the general supervision of the District’s Board of Supervisors. The District Educator will report to the Education Coordinator and will work with all District staff to ensure effective implementation of District projects and programs.
