South Portland Students Study Local Brooks

As South Portland 6th graders raised their brook trout this spring, they turned their eyes to Trout Brook and Red Brook to learn more about stream habitat, water chemistry, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and common sources of pollution. Some of the 6th grade students visited Trout Brook to release their brook trout while other 6th graders visited Red Brook to look for potential pollution sources, stormwater infrastructure, and survey aquatic macroinvertebrates from Red Brook and neighboring Long Creek.

This amazing program is funded by the Interlocal Stormwater Working Group and Portland Water District and taught by the Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District and South Portland Parks and Recreation.
