Salt Marsh Restoration

This past week, District team member and Maine Conservation Corps/AmeriCorps member Griffen Northrop participated in a salt marsh restoration project with other AmeriCorps members and our partners at Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge (RCNWR) in Wells, Maine.

Griffen helped aid the RCNWR team dig runnels (narrow channels in the ground for water to flow through) and remove ditch plugs to better allow tidal flow. This practice is essential for rising seas. Our native saltmarsh sparrows rely on low variability in tide levels to lay their eggs so excess soil from the restoration activities were used to create nesting mounds for them.
